Baptism is not necessary for salvation but it is an important step of obedience in the spiritual growth of the believer.  Baptism is what proclaims to the world that we identify our lives with Jesus Christ.  When we are baptized we symbolically represent the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.  We show that we have died to our old lives of separation from God and have been raised to new lives in Christ.
